PASCO COUNTY, FL – One person lost their life following a chain-reaction collision Friday afternoon, May 16, near Wesley Chapel, according to WFTS Tampa Bay.
Florida Highway Patrol said the wreck occurred on the southbound side of Interstate 75 near milepost 277. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at around 3:15 p.m.
A preliminary investigation shows a 69-year-old Longboat Key man likely experienced some kind of medical emergency while driving a Tesla Model S southbound.
At one point, the Tesla veered off the travel lane and struck a Ford F150 driven by a 43-year-old woman from Riverview, who was also traveling with an 11-year-old boy. Moments later, the Tesla collided with a Toyota Corolla that was operated by a 70-year-old man, of Wesley Chapel. The force of that collision then sent the Corolla into a Peterbilt truck driven by a 59-year-old man from St. Petersburg. The Tesla proceeded in its southbound direction until it hit a Volvo tractor-trailer operated by a 31-year-old man, of Tampa.
First responders rushed the Tesla driver to a local hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. No other drivers or involved parties were reported hurt.
