New Data Shows Pinellas County Most Dangerous Area in Florida for Pedestrians | St. Petersburg Pedestrian Accident Attorneys Whittel & Melton

According to recent state traffic accident data, Pinellas County had the highest percentage of pedestrian-involved crashes and fatalities in the state between 2019 and 2021.

A pedestrian was involved in an average of 503 collisions in Pinellas County between 2019 and 2021, the highest number of crashes in the state, according to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Furthermore, throughout the three-year period of 2019–2021, there were, on average, 44 fatalities and 441 injuries.

The data shows that there were 47,855 car crashes in Pinellas County between 2019 and 2021, with 1,509 of those involving pedestrians.

Both the Florida Department of Transportation and Pinellas County officials acknowledged the challenges that exist for pedestrians, according to reports. New pedestrian bridges spanning U.S. 19 are among the recent initiatives targeted at enhancing pedestrian safety in Pinellas County.

Nobody gets into their car with the intention of injuring a pedestrian, and most individuals try to drive carefully and with the safety of others in mind. If drivers pay attention to their surroundings and drive safely on the road, more incidents can be avoided. Here are some pointers to ensure the safety of pedestrians:

  • In places like neighborhoods, parks, and school zones where children are present, drive slowly.
  • When you approach an intersection, slow down and scan the area for pedestrians who may be crossing.
  • Be cautious when pulling out of a driveway or a parking lot.
  • Be mindful to pedestrians with special needs.
  • Distractions like texting or making phone calls should also be avoided when driving.

Even at 10 mph, a car can seriously injure a pedestrian by causing bone fractures, traumatic brain injuries, or spinal cord trauma. A car crash with a pedestrian that occurs at 30 mph or faster can easily cause a fatal accident. Medical bills and funeral expenditures can quickly add up. Medical bills, lost pay, rehabilitation, physical therapy, permanent disability, and other such expenses can quickly add up following serious injuries.

The victims of these accidents should not be forced to suffer the consequences of another person’s negligent behavior. Those who caused the harm should be held accountable for their irresponsibility. If you or a loved one has been injured by a car while walking, it is critical to seek the advice of a seasoned pedestrian accident attorney to get the full and fair compensation you deserve.
